Beyond Plastics

A national education and organising project with more than 200 local groups, a restaurant guide, a "skip the stuff" toolkit, and the report that put the US plastic recycling rate at five to six percent. Activist in tone; useful in substance.

Beyond Plastics is a project built to end plastic pollution through education and organising, with more than 200 local groups across the United States. It runs campaigns, investigates companies and lobbies legislators, and it also produces some of the most practical free material available on the subject, which is why it appears in this section more than once.

What it publishes

  • "Hold the Plastic, Please", the restaurant guide, which has its own page here.
  • The Skip the Stuff toolkit, including printable posters for the counter with no logo on them.
  • "The Real Truth About the U.S. Plastics Recycling Rate" (May 2022), which worked through the available data to put the national rate at between five and six percent. It is the source most people are quoting when they say plastic recycling does not work, and it is worth reading the method rather than only the headline.

How to use it

For a restaurant, the guide and the posters. For a diner who wants to do more than refuse a straw, the local groups: Beyond Plastics' list of them is a way to find people in your area working on the ordinances described on the foodware laws page.

About the organisation
